Related Copies of Anne Frank’s diary torn in… The state Department of Corrections announced Thursday that it would have the sedative midazolam available as an alternate drug for lethal injections. Midazolam was one of two drugs used in the January execution of Ohio convict Dennis McGuire, who was put to death for the rape and murder of a 22-year-old woman in 1994. Like many U.S. states, Virginia has been forced to find new drugs to use on condemned prisoners after European-based manufacturers banned American prisons from using their drugs in capital punishment. McGuire’s lawyers argued that the drug would bring on an agonizing, suffocating death, and witnesses said the condemned convict appeared to be gasping for air for more than 10 minutes after receiving his injection. The Illinois-based pharmaceutical company Hospira, which manufactures midazolam, says it opposes the use of its products in lethal injections and no longer sells it to prison hospitals. “However, due to the complex supply chain and the gray market in the United States, despite our efforts, Hospira cannot guarantee that a U.S. prison could not secure restricted products through other channels not under Hospira’s control,” the company says in a statement on its website. According to the website for the Death Penalty Information Center, Virginia uses a three-drug protocol, which involves drugs that have different effects on the body. Copyright 2014 by CNN NewSource . China calls on U.S. to scrap meeting between Obama and Dalai Lama
Its the same generic concern of needing a news nanny to make sure were all well informed, he added. The same people who are concerned about the NSA spying on Americans ought to be concerned about this. The research will include questions about the process by which stories are selected and on how often stations cover critical information needs” and will be posed through voluntary surveys. However, Pai remains wary. Participation is voluntaryin theory, he wrote. But the FCC’s queries may be hard for the broadcasters to ignore. They would be out of business without an FCC license. Several months ago, the GOP-led House Committee on Energy and Commerce said the proposed field study showed startling disregard for the news medias freedom and urged agency Commissioner Tom Wheeler to suspend the effort. Given the widespread calls for the commission to respect the First Amendment and stay out of the editorial decisions of reporters and broadcasters, we were shocked to see that the FCC is putting itself back in the business of attempting to control the political speech of journalists, committee leaders wrote in their December 2013 letter.

Beijing accuses the Dalai Lama of being a separatist who foments unrest in Tibet, a region it claims has been part of China since “ancient times.” The Dalai Lama, who fled to India in 1959 after a failed uprising, has long denied China’s assertion that he’s seeking Tibetan independence. He says he wants only enough autonomy to protect its traditional Buddhist culture. The Obama administration says it supports the Dalai Lama’s “Middle Way” approach to the political tensions over protests for Tibetan independence. “The United States recognizes Tibet to be a part of the People’s Republic of China and we do not support Tibetan independence,” said National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden. “The United States strongly supports human rights and religious freedom in China.” Concerns over human rights Over the past five years, at least 125 Tibetans have set themselves on fire, most of them fatally, to protest Chinese rule, according to Tibetan advocacy groups. Beijing has taken a tough line on Tibetan self-immolators, their associates and other forms of protest. Tibetans have been convicted of murder in Chinese courts for “inciting” people to set themselves on fire.

After the Korean governments reached an agreement to hold reunions, less than a day later, North Korea said it may back out if South Korea holds its annual military drills with the United States. Families torn apart for more than 60 years — separated by the Korean War — were given the chance to reunite for few hours at a mountain resort. Here, South Korean Ryu Young-Shik (L), 92, meets with his North Korean relatives. South Korean Park Yang-Gon (L) meets with his North Korean brother Park Yang-Soo. Without any regular forms of communications between the two Koreas, the family members have gone decades without contact. South Korean Kim Sung-Yoon (R), 96, meets with her North Korean sister. The meetings are likely to be the last time the separated families will have contact with one another. South Korean Lee Oh-Hwan (L), 85, meets with her North Korean sisters. The negotiations leading to the reunions were painstaking, reflecting the tensions between North and South Korean governments. South Korean Lee Young-Shil (R), 88, meets with her North Korean sister Lee Jung-Shil. The rarity of inter-Korea reunions meant that even participants in ill health insisted on going to Mount Kumgang for the event, desperate for a chance to see their relatives.

North and South Korea hold first family reunion in three years
Normally, I wouldn’t object. “Long live the New Flesh,” I always say. But this is going to be one of the first commercial products to try breaking this ground and, if handled poorly, could prove self-defeating. Atlus has already specified two barriers for preventing abuse of the system. Laughably, one of them is that they’re not going to tell everyone what all of the triggers are. Certainly, that will make the hunt for them a little more enjoyable. Once they are discovered, they’ll wind up on a list within a few hours and appearing on every stream of the game. Back in my day, if we wanted to get a cheat code for a game, we’d have to get it in a magazine or wait as much as a month for the next in a series of game guide books to include a list. But these kids have no respect for the old ways. The other protective measure is a timer system for commands, to stop spamming of them in-game, something that will most certainly prevent viewers from destroying the experience of the player (and other viewers).

“We just wanted to end a very good trip, and this is a tough place to do it,” Wade said. “This is a very gratifying win.” The Heat held on despite 28 points from Thunder forward Kevin Durant. “Those guys hit some tough ones over some good defense,” Durant said, with the Heat closing at .547 from the field. “We just had a bad night.” It was, without question, a significant night for the Thunder, with point guard Russell Westbrook back in the lineup for the first time in nearly two months. And yet there, the day before, was Durant insisting otherwise. “It’s not a championship game,” he said. “It’s not a deciding game of the playoffs. This game is not going to get us in the playoffs or knock us out.” The other side? From the outset it was clear this one was more than one of 82 regular-season obligations. How much did this one mean to the Heat? So much that they essentially put together four of their best efforts of the season.
